Thenmala is a small village situated at the foot of the Western Ghats and has been selected by the World Tourism Organization as one of the best eco tourism projects in the whole world.
Thenmala is located in the Kollam District of the state of Kerala, at about 72 kilometers from the capital city Thiruvananthapuram. Thenmala in malayalam means honey hills and as per the name the honey collected here is of good quality and has good medicinal value too.
Facilities at the Thenmala Eco Tourism Project
There are facilities such as boardwalk, amphitheatre, boating in the Sanctuary reservoir, sculpture garden, Musical Dancing Fountain, etc. are also provided at Thenmala for ecotourists. An Environmental education and interpretation center is also being set up at Thenmala and is expected to be useful to the tourists and the locals alike.
Best season to visit Thenmala Eco Tourism Project
The altitude of the hills is about 100- 600 meters above mean sea level. The hottest of the months in this area are from March to May till the south west monsoon starts. The coldest period here will be December and January. May to November will be the monsoon time, first South west and next north east monsoons.
You can also visit the beautiful Palaruvi waterfalls which is about 16 km away, wqhile you travel towards Shenkottah. Thenmala Eco-Tourism is open round the year. The Kerala Tourism Development Corporation have arranged conducted tours from the Capital City of Thiruvananthapuram and also by the District Tourism Promotion Council of Kollam District.
