Silent Valley Silent Valley is an important tourist destination in Kerala with it's rich bid-diversity and stunning scenic beauties. The valley is gifted with it's majestic hills, rivers, wildlife, exhilarating trekking trails etc. The valley is nestled on the Western Ghats, on Kundali hills. As the name suggests, the valley remains silent amidst the dense forest throughout the year. Silent Valley is known by the name Sairandrivanam, meaning "Forset in valley", in Malayalam. There is one more story behind the name. It's related to the epic Mahabharatha and Pandava's wife,Draupadi, meaning "Draupadi's forest". In spite of it's small size, it's one of the most attractive and frequently visited national partk in India.
Attractions in Silent ValleyThe most fascinating feature of Silent valley is it's calmness. But the lush greenery, landscapes, the rivers flowing through the green vegetation, hills etc makes the place a splendid wildlife destination for the nature lovers. The trekking trails through the silent forest is a completely different one among those trails available in Kerala. Silent Valley was declared as National park in 1984. It hosts the animals like lion-tailed macaque and the nilgiri langur which are in the red list for threatened animals by IUCN .
The bio-diversity in the National Park is over whelming. It has got varieties of animal species like tigers, lion-tailed macaques, squirrels, Nilgiri langur, elephants etc. The most exciting wildlife creature here is the lion-tailed macaques. If you want to have a look at the macaques, this is the one and only place in Kerala. Silent Valley also enjoys the rich culture of some herbs, orchids, plants etc. The place is also a host to the famous King Cobra. Those who want to watch the wildlife at the closest, the evening and the morning are the best time. All the animals will be spotted near to you during this time. Some of them may be there in the river side, drinking water.
For those who want to explore the adventures of trekking trails, the valley has option for it too. But make sure that you are having a guide with you as the valley is very confusing. Poochipara is one such place. You can get there by a 7 km wald from the valley. There are several things to note when you are having a trekking trail through Silent valley. But make sure that you don't loose your blood to leeches. * Trekking trails are available from the local place, Mukkali. But you need to take the permissions from the Forest Department Mukkali. * Trekking trails of any days are available. The maximum number of days is four days. You can choose the routes accordingly. * Alcohol, polythene etc are not permitted in the valley. * It's better to have some leech proof boots. Apart from the large number of leeches, the place also has some other poisonous plants and reptiles including varieties of snakes * Start your trip early in the morning to have more chances to watch animals. * Always keep silence so that animals won't run away from you.
The Kunthipuzha river flowing thorugh the heart of Silent Valley makes it much more fantastic. You will feel that you have gone to the old golden days of tension free lifes. The calmness of the place is slightly interrupted by the mists and the sound of water flowing in Kunthipuzha river.
