Silent Valley National Park is located in the Nilgiri Hills,Palakkad District.It explored in 1847 by the botanist Robert Wight. The core zone area is 236.74 square kilometres
The park is one of the last undisturbed tracts of South Western Ghats.
The original name of the forest is Sairandhrivanam.The first explorer was a Botanist named Robert Wright (1847).He named the forest Silent valley.
Different versions are there behind the naming.
1.The absence of the noisy Cicadas-Cheevidu.
2.The name Sarandhri anglicized.
3.The presence of Lion-Tailed Macaques Macaca silenus
How to Reach
Bus transport is available to Mukkali(23 Km).
Hire a private jeep from Mukkali to Sairandhiri or trek right up.
Jeep takes 1 hour while a trek uphill takes between 4-5 hours.
Nearest town: Mannarkkad-66 Km
Nearest Railhead: Coimbatore (68 Km), Palakkad(106 Km)
Nearest Airport: Coimbatore (68 Km)
Best time to visit: September to March
Some Forest department run accommodation available.
For necessary details, permission are to be obtained to visit.
