Kollam was an international emporium of trade and it was a prosperous commercial center. It is situated about 71 Kilometers north of the state capital, Thiruvananthapuram. The famous Ashtamudi Lake is situated at the town edge. Kollam is the headquarters of Kerala State Cashew Development Corporation. Kollam was one of the earliest center of Christian activity in Kerala. The present town of Kollam was built by the Syrian Merchant named Sapir Iso, in the 9th Century A.D. Kollam is an important commercial, industrial and trading center. The Thangassery Light House is a center of attraction; it is about 144 feet and is built in 1902. Several Churches and Mosques are in and around Kollam, Ananda Valleswaram Temple, Pullichira Church (established in 1700 A.D), and the Chinnakkada Palli (One of the oldest and most important Mosques). The Thangal Kunju Musliar College of Engineering (TKM- 7 kilometers east of Kollam town) was the first of its kind in the private sector in the state.
Some of the important spots of local sight are the Mahatma Gandhi beach (just 2 Kilometers from the town), Thirumullavaram beach (5 kilometers from the town), the sea here is ideal for swimming and bathing , The park at Kochupilamoodu and Ashramam picnic Village (center of various tourism development activities of the district). Here is 200 years old Government Guest House which stands alone Ashtamudi lake. The adventure park, located in the shores of the Ashtamudi backwaters is an Eco friendly park in Kollam

It is situated about 80 kilometers from Punalur. It is an important pilgrim center, the Sastha temple here, situated amidst dense forest. The two important festivals of this temple are Mandala Pooja in December – January months and the festival held at 'Revathi' in January-February months. The Therotam and the Pushpabhishekam are the two notable features of the festival.

This place is located at 26 Kilometers from Kollam City and on the lakeside of Kollam-Alappuzha National Water Way. The ‘Green Channel Back Water Resort' at Alumkadavu makes itself a good location for both Indian and foreign Tourists. The main beauty of the resort is that the gardens of hundreds of coconut palms and the serene back water make the beauty of blue green stretches.

It is situated about 73 kilometers east of Kollam. It is an important pilgrim center of the district. In early days it is an important trade route for merchants from either side of Western Ghats. The main attraction of this place is that the shrine dedication of Lord Sastha. Then temple has some of the fine sculptures and the mural paintings. There is a big waterfall known as Palaravi Meaning River of milk (falling from a height of 300 feet) is about 5 kilometers away from Aryankavu and all the trains towards Shencottah have a stop at Aryankavu.

Chavara is situated 14 kilometers north of Kollam. The place is famous for the mineral sand; thousands tons of mineral sand are exported from Chavara to various countries. Four major industrial establishments in Chavara are: the Indian Rare Earths, The Kerala Premo Pipe factory, Kerala Mineral and Metal factory and the Titanium Complex.

Jetayu paraa:

It is a huge rock in Kollam district, this huge rock is situated at the Chadayamangalam village on the M.C road. The name comes from the epic Ramayana that the Jetayu, the giant bird in the epic, fell after failing in its attempt to spot Ravana taking site away. The rock can be seen from the Chadayamangalam junction and it's a great ideal for trekking by the lovers of adventure.

Oachira:

it is situated, 32 kilometers north of Kollam on the Kollam Alappuzha National Highway. Oachira is a unique pilgrim center and is on the boundary of Kollam district. It is an important handicraft center where the fancy articles are manufactured. All classes of people worship the presiding deity the parabrahmam and the famous festival Oachirakkali is held annually in the month of June.

Palaravi water falls:

It is a big waterfall known as “Palaravi" Meaning River of milk situated near Aryankavu, Kollam - Shencottah NH 208 .The water is falling from a height of 300 feet. The main season to visit the water fall is from the month of June to the month of January.

Punalur:

The place Punalur is an important industrial center of Kerala. It is situated 45 kilometers from Kollam. Punalur is the head Quarters of Pathanapuram Taluk. A 400 feet long Suspension bridge across the Kallada River erected in 1877 is the only one of its kind in south India is situated in Punalur.

Sasthamcotta Lake:

This village situated about 19 kilometers from the Kollam town. It is a beautiful spot that contain a health resort. This place is famous as center of pilgrimage. The Sasthamkotta Lake is the largest freshwater lake in Kerala which is surrounded by hills. A large part of the lake has been reclaimed for agriculture. The lake has a capacity to hold 22390 million liters of water.

Thangassery:

The place is situated 5 kilometers away from Kollam town and this place has historical importance. The remnants of the Portuguese and Dutch forts still exist in this place. Here we can see the pretty old churches which have established in the 18th century. The main attraction of this place is the light house, the Thangassery Light House is a center of attraction and it is about 144 feet which is built in 1902. A fishing harbor is also situated in this place. The place Thangassery was an enclave of the Portuguese, Dutch and British in succession.

Thenmala:

The Thenmala is situated at 66 kilometers east of Kollam. It is such a beautiful place which meets the point of Kollam-Shencottah road and Trivandrum-Shencottah road. The place is surrounded by dense forest. The main attractions of this place are the large number of rubber and tea plantations. The Timber of all varieties are exported from here to all parts of the country. The one important place in Thenmala is the Dam site which is opens for the all tourists. The Eco tourist's center is situated at Thenmala.
