Main Attractions In Wayanad

Historically important places in Wayanad
1. Edakkal Caves
Edakkal Caves are the two caves in the Ambukuthymala. This is situated just 3km from Amabalavazhal. Actually there are two chambers in Edakkal. With a height of 30 ft, these caves also has some sculptures on it's rocks. These sculptures point towards a rich civilization in the ancient period. The entry to the caves will be closed after 5pm. This cave can be accessed only by a 1 km trekking trail from Edakkal.

2. Pazhassi Tomb.
Pazhassi Raja was one among the earliest Kings who fought against the Britshers. He is popularly known as the Lion of Kerala' - Veera Pazhassi Raja. He was the first to start Guerrilla war against the Britishers. This place is in memory of legendary Pazhassi. Pazhassi tomb is about 35 km from Kalpetta.



Waterfalls in Wayanad


1.Meenmutty Waterfalls
This is the largest waterfall in Wayanad and the second largest in Kerala. This three tier waterfall falls from a height of 300m. A trip to Meenmutty waterfall needs 2km trekking through the dense green forest. This is the most spectacular waterfall in Wayanad.

2. Soochipara water falls
This is also a three tired waterfall like the Meenmutty waterfall. This waterfall is close to the Meenmutty waterfall. This give you the opportunity to watch the nature at it's best, trekking and rock climbing.

3.Kanthanpara Water falls
The 30 meter high waterfall is near the Glenora Homestay. This waterfall is not as famous as other waterfalls in Wayanad. This is a slow and peaceful waterfall compared to other waterfalls in this area.

4.Chethalayam water falls
This is a smaller waterfall situated around 12 km from Sultan's Batherry. This place provides a large number of vantage points for bird watching.



Wildlife in Wayanad


1. Muthanga Wildlife Sanctuary
Muthanga wildlife sanctuary is situated in Muthanga, 18 km from Sulthan's Batherry. This is also a part of Nilgiri biosphere. This place is declared as Project Elephant Area. The main animals found here include Elephants, Leopards, Gaur, Sambar, Cheetal, Barking Deer, Hanuman Langur ,Slender Loris and a small population of Tigers.

2.Pakshipathalam bird sanctuary
Pakshipathalam bird sanctuary is located in the Brahmagiri hills in Western Ghats, just 7 km towards Thirunelli Temple. . This place is very deep inside the forests with large number of caves. These caves host varieties of birds and animals.

3.Tholpetty wild life sanctuary
Tholpetty wild life sanctuary is also known as Begur wildlife sanctuary. This place is at the border of Karnataka state, 20 km from Mananthavady. There are many plant species found in this sanctuary which has high medicinal values. The lush greenery of this place attracts the tourist the most.It has a huge variety of bird species as well as animals, such as, deer, tigers, elephants, leopards, boars, etc



View points in Wayanad


1.Lakkidi view point
This well known Viewpoint is situated on the ninth hairpin bend in the Thamarassery pass. This place will give you the view of the dense forests and mountains from a height of 700 metre. You can watch the vehicles moving in single rows through the pass. All these make this viewpoint a famous one in Kerala. Lakkidi is known as the 'Gateway of Wayanad'.

2.Phantom Rock
This is known by the name Cheengeri mala by the locals, related to the skull shape of the rock. This is very close to Ambalabazhal town.

3.Boys town view Point
This viewpoint is situated on the way to the famous Kottiyur temple, 15 km from Mananthavady. In some occasions, this place provide you an easy view of the Kannur coastal area. There are small herbal gardens, nature care centre in Boys town view point.



Lakes in Wayanad
1. Pookot Lake
This natural fresh water lake is located at a distance of 3 km from Vythiri. This place is nestled in the lap of evergreen deciduous forests. This place provides an excellent site for boating. There are small gardens and a aquarium for fresh water fishes neat the lake.

2.Banasura sagar lake
This lake is located 21 km from Kalpetta. This is the second largest earthen dam in Asia and the largest one of it's kind in India.

3. Kuruva Dweep river islands
The calmness and the beauty of the evergreen forst in Kuruvadweep makes it an excellent tourist spot. This 950 acres land is 16 km away from Mananthavady and is situated along the tributaries of Kabani river.Kuruva island is home to many rare species of birds, herbs and orchids.
