Mobile number portability (MNP) allows customers to switch service providers without changing their cell number. MNP will be available across India from Thursday, January 20. Using MNP , now you can retain your number which is of a service provider while changing to another service provider. As an example, suppose you have an idea number Starting with 9947; with MNP, you can change to Airtel with the same number. After porting the number, you have no more association with the previous service provider.
Currently, Using Mobile Number Portability, the customer can change providers within the state and between CDMA and GSM technologies to provide both data and voice facilities. It is sure that customers will choose providers which provide more options and features and fare data tarrifs, thus increasing the competition among providers. 1. Can I switch from CDMA to GSM?
Yes. You can switch from CDMA to GSM and Vice Versa. But you have to change the mobile phone, because CDMA does not support hand sets used for GSM and vice versa.
2. Can I switch over to Bangalore circle? , I am from Kerala.
No, Currently MNP is available within the local circle only.
3. What is the fee for Mobile Number Portability?
Yes. The New provider will charge you a Port in fee for change to them. For all service providers,the fee / charge for MNP is Rs.19 fixed by TRAI. BSNL will not collect any fees for those switch to BSNL.
4. What is the application criteria for MNP ?
If you are a Prepaid customer, the credit balances will not be carry forwarded.
if you are a post-paid customer, there should not be any due in the existing provider.
5.Can I switch to the previous Provider, If I already changed to another?
You can change only after 90 days, if you already ported a number. The minimum number of days after porting to a number is 90 days.
6. I submitted the application, but don't want to port to another provider.What to do?
You can cancel your application within 24 hours. But the Port In fee will not be refunded.
7. How Many Days taken for Mobile Number Portability ?
After you submit the application, it takes maximum 7 days to port to the new provider.
8. Is there any downtime while porting the numbers?
For a maximum of 2 hours, you can't use your number. Both incoming and out going calls are interrupted. The porting is carried down at the midnight usually between 12 am and 5 am. So it, will not affect you at all. The time and date will be send as an sms to the customer.
9. What is the Procedure for Mobile Number Portability
First, you have to send an SMS in the format PORT space 'your mobile number' to 1900. Then you will get the Unique porting code (UPC). Then you have to submit an application to the provide you want to switch to using this UPC. You also have to submit the required documents and payments. They will process the application, and within few days, you will get the new MNP SIM card. You must submit your application within 15 days, after getting the UPC.

11. Do I get a new SIM card after MNP ?
After submitting the application to the service provider, you will get a new SIM card from the new service provider.
12. When I have to replace the old sim with the new sim?
You will get an SMS in the old SIM from the new provider in which they will mention about when you can start using the new number.
13. What about the next bill after I ported the number?
You have to provide your billing address in the porting request form. The next bill will be forwarded to the billing address.
14. What about the remaining talk time in my existing SIM? Will they carry forward to the new SIM?
No,the balance amount of talk time is not carry forward to the new SIM upon porting the number.
15. What about the numbers saved in my SIM? , will they automatically ported to the New Sim?
