Owners claim that this name can win a billion hearts. Well, this name sounds good in any other context, but in the context of IPL, it is not good enough. But why? We have Rajastan Royals from Rajastan, Mumbai Indians from Mumbai, Chennai Super Kings from Chennai, Delhi Dare Devils from Delhi, Kolkota Knight Riders from Kolkota,… etc, etc. Going by these names, the convention used for naming IPL teams is based on the region or state or city they belong to. Home ground is very important in IPL matches, as the cheering crowd of fans can boost the morale of the home team, and can even lead to turning points in matches – recovering from the brink of defeat to win the game. In Ahmedabad, who will cheer Team Kochi?
Another reason given for shifting of the match venue is the high entertainment tax in Kerala. Government should look into this matter, and should do the needful to remove this obstacle. IPL matches in Kochi will bring in a lot of revenues in other ways. Besides, this can boost the tourism potential of Kerala. Matches played in Kochi can invigorate Kerala youths to take up cricket as a serious sport, and will do wonders for the promotion of this sport in the state. Kerala is already in the forefront of athletics and other sports in comparison to other states. Through IPL, Kerala government can give the much needed boost to this game by choosing to forfeit taxes.
If something is not done in a hurry, owners of Team Kochi will go for Ahmedabad as the permanent home ground for the team. If that happens, that will be the end of Team Kochi.
