Aranmula Ponnamma, one of the eminent and famous Malayalam actress passed away(22 March 1914 - 21 February 2011)today at a private hospital in Trivandrum.
Aranmula Ponnamma is a National Award winning Malayalam film actress who is widely known as the mother figure in Malayalam cinema. She was born at Aranmula on 22nd March 1914 to Malethu Kesava Pillai and Parukutty Amma. She entered into the field of acting at the age of 29. She was very much active in this field from 1943 to 2003. She made in to the Malayalam film in the year 1950 through the famous movie 'Sasidharan' as the role of a mother. From there she appeared in many movies as the role of a mother. During her career, she a played the role of a mother of the first generation actors (Thikkurissy Sukumaran Nair), second generation actors (Prem Nazir) and the third generation actors (Suresh gopi and Mohan Lal).
Ponnamma received the State and National awards for best supporting actress for her performance in Kathapurushan(1995), directed by Adoor Gopalakrishnan. She had also received the 'J.C. Daniel Award for Life time Achievement' in 2006 for her 60 years of performance in Malayalam movie.
