Urumi is a forthcoming historical epic film directed by Cinematographer-Director Santhosh Sivan. Urumi has Prithviraj, Genelia, Prabhudeva, Vidya Balan, Tabu, Nithya Menon and many others in the star cast. The film is getting very good preview reports and will be a sure hit in Malayalam. The script of Urumi is written by Shankar Ramakrishnan. Shankar makes a brief study of Indian History for writing the script of Urumi. The Urumi's story takes place in the the sixteenth century and set in the backdrop of the fierce warrior clans of Northern Kerala. It focuses on the cult of a hero Chirakkal Kelu Nayanar (Prithviraj) - a man with an epic mission. His mission and target is to kill the Viceroy of Portuguese Empire in India- Vasco De Gama. The movie is spread between the second and third visit of Vasco da Gama to India. It tries to tell how Vasco da Gama could have met a bloody death in AD 1524. Through Urumi Santhos Sivan tries to ask was Vasco da Gama an explorer or an invader? Almost every persons only knew little facts about him that he found the sea route to India, landed in Malabar Coast and went back with a lot of pepper.
But Urumi tries to explore the real personality of Vasco De Gama.
Kelu Nayanar has to encounter various conflicts within the kinsmen and Kings, ministers, peasants. He also has to encounter conflicts within a warring Muslim warrior princess Ayesha (Genelia) of the famed Arackal Sultanat. During the second visit of Vasco da Gama to Kerala in AD 1502, Miri, a Mecca Ship, commanded to be set on fire in which so many women and children were burnt alive in the massacre. Kelu has a legendary golden Urumi which was made from the left over ornaments of that dead women and children.
Kelu has a childhood friend Vavvali(Prabhudeva) who supported him in his mission. Though Vavvali comes from Muslim Society, Kelu considered him as his elder brother and keeps a good friendship. The film then tells how Kelu creates his own army of the people against the mighty Empire and whether they succeeded in their mission. Kelu's revolt against Vasco De Gama considered as the first Colonial Advance in India of its kind.
