The story of Urumi is based on the assassination of Vas Co De Gama during his second and third visit in Kerala. Kelu has a legendary golden Urumi which was made from the left over ornaments of that dead women and children. Later Kelu gets support from the princess and his child hoodfriend Vavaali(Prabhu Deva) in his mission. The film then tells how Kelu creates his own army of the people against the mighty Empire and whether they succeeded in their missionReview of Malayalam Movie Urumi
Urumi is really a new treatment in Malayalam Films. We had never seen such a movie which depicts the emotions and moods of peoples who thirst for the revenge. What makes the film different from earlier ventures in this genre is the perfect casting with their super performances, spectacular visuals, narration of the story and a brilliant direction. The film is totally different from other period dramas happend in Malayalam. Santhosh sivan gave an above average performance in the direction that the film does not have any commercial gimmics other than the casting. The film reminds us some of the unknown ancient heroes in our history. It really creates a deep bonding with their hearts. The film shot in super locations really adequate to the period of the film that every thing looks fresh and green even in our mind. The director here clearly avoids computer graphics and other gimmics that usually there in period war films.
The narration in Urumi is a new kind in Malayalam films. The script by Shankar Ramakrishnan is above average. He succeeded to an extent to depict the emotional and thirstful minds of the characters. Although in the second half the script lacks momentum, we can adjust that mistakes considering the effort he put in the writing. But the story of the movie may not appeal to some audience and needs some extra logic to understand. The editing of the film is OK. The movie is a bit long and also a bit slow in the second half. Some parts could have been trimmed to shorten the length. Cinematography of Santhosh Sivan along with his Assistant Anjali Shukla really deserves an appreciation. All the frames are a visual treat to the viewers. The climax of the film could have been better by avoiding the slowmotion sequences. The film has got so many songs- some of them good to hear and few of them can be avoided. But for the music department Deepak Dev really surprises every one with his talent in creating such type of songs. The BGM is also good from Deepak.
The main highlight of the movie is the perormance of its lead actors. Prithviraj has got a brilliant role and will be a break in his career. He does not have more dialogues, but he excelled in the role by giving what the character wants. Prabhudeva as his friend makes a cake walk through his role with his experience. His comic personality along with the love track really a treat to watch. In the cameo roles, Tamil actor Arya is in the top. Although his role is a short one, it has enough space in the progressing of the story. We cannot end the list of performances without mentioning the real atarrer of the film- Genelia. She rewrites her bubbly image with her fantastic performance here. She excelled in actions scenes and in the song 'Aaro Neeyaro'. Vidya balan and Tabu comes with their cameo roles and gives an OK performace. Nithy Balan as Bala made her role cute and she looks beautiful and pretty in her costumes. His love track with Prabhudeva and 'Chinni Chinni' song with Prabhudeva is good to watch. The other actors like Amol Gupte, Jagathy Srrekumar, Alex, Robin etc comes with natural performances.
Urumi is a movie that occured very rare in nowadays. For its technical brilliance and historical concept it really deserves a winning in the box office.
