Till date, he has acted in Malayalam and Tamil films. Though very less number of films have become a hit, Prithiviraj has still emerged as a heartthrob of South India due to his dashing looks, intense eyes and acting talent. Some of his notable films are Swapnakoodu, Urumi, Classmates, Mozhi, Vaasthavam and Thirakkatha. News has it that Prithviraj is stepping into the Bollywood industry and will be acting in his debut Hindi film opposite the popular Bollywood actress Rani Mukherjee. Through some of Prithviraj's interviews one can understand that he is a very intelligent person who knows how to handle the media and the questions that are put forth to him by media. Sometimes he may sound rude in the way he gives his answers, but it shows his intellectual personality which is not often found in the other film stars. The best feature of Prithviraj is that he has got the looks which are suitable both for hero roles as well as villain roles. He has also sung few songs in some of his films and has produced one major film called Urumi which is a multi-lingual historical film dubbed in Tamil and English.Early life and family life Prithviraj Sukumaran
Prithviraj hails from the district of Thiruvananthapuram in Kerala. He was born on October 16th 1982 to Sukumaran and Mallika, both of whom are also from the film industry. His dad, Sukumaran has passed away and he was a popular film star in Malayalam cinema during the 70's. His mother, Mallika Sukumaran is acting in television serials usually in the role of the evil mother-in-law. She had stopped acting after her marriage to Sukumaran but is back to television after his death. Prithviraj's elder brother Indrajith and sister-in-law Poornima Indrajith are also film actors. His brother Indrajith Sukumaran is usually seen in films as a villain and sister-in-law Poornima Indrajith (formerly known as Poornima Mohan) also acted in Malayalam and Tamil films. Prithviraj recently got married to well known media personality Supriya Menon who is based in Mumbai. She is working as a reporter for BBC World in Mumbai. The couple had a love marriage after getting attracted to each other through their meetings on the sets of the films.Educational background of Prithviraj Sukumaran
Prithviraj completed his schooling from St Mary's School, Poojappura. During his school days, Prithviraj was very active in extra-curricular activities such as dramas, elocutions, debates and skits. Later he shifted from this school and has studied both at Sainik School Kazhakoottam, Thiruvananthapuram and Bharathiya Vidya Bhavan, Thiruvananthapuram. Prithviraj has won the title called 'Mr LA Fest' in the year 1999 at LA Fest. It is an annual inter-school arts festival hosted by a famous school in Thiruvananthapuram called Loyola School. After finishing his school education, Prithviraj went abroad to pursue a Bachelor's degree in Information Technology at the University of Tasmania, Australia. It was during this period that he was called by director Ranjith to play the lead role in the film Nandanam. As Prithviraj is already from a film-based family, it was not at all tough to get contacts in the industry and was introduced to Ranjith by well-known director Fazil. After the success of Nandanam, Prithviraj decided to halt his studies for the time being and concentrate on acting.Acting career of Prithviraj Sukumaran
Prithviraj's debut film in Malayalam is Nandanam in the year 2002. The film was director Ranjith's second directorial film and the heroine of this film was Navya Nair. The film became a blockbuster hit in Kerala due to the spiritual aspect that prevailed throughout the film. After this, his next few films were flops such as Nakshathrakkannulla Rajakumaran Avanundoru Rajakumari, Stop Violence, Vellithira and Meerayude Dukhavum Muthuvinte Swapnavum. His next big hit came with Swapnakoodu alongside Meera Jasmine, Bhavana, Kunchako Bobban and Jayasurya. The film was a romantic-comedy film which gelled very well with the youth audience. Prithviraj has been a part of an art film called Vargam in which he played the role of a sub-inspector who is corrupt to the core. Another film which brought a lot of fame and recognition to Prithviraj is Vaasthavam for which he got the state award for best actor in 2006. He became the youngest actor to win the award. The amazing fact was that veteran actor Mammotty had done three movies in that year which had all done well at the box office namely Palunku, Karutha Pakshikal and Kaiyoppu. Obviously everyone had expected Mammotty to win the best actor award that year but to their surprise, the jury decided to give it to Prithviraj. Another super-duper hit which starred Prithviraj alongside Kavya Madhavan was Classmates directed by Lal Jose. This film was like a turning point in his career as it gave other director's more confidence to take him as the lead role in their future youth-oriented movies. Prithviraj's next big hit was the film Chocolate alongside actress Roma which was yet again a youth film based on love and romance. In the year 2008, Prithviraj had two good films namely Thalappavu and Thirakkatha both of which did not well commercially but were critically acclaimed. Puthiya Mukham was his next hit film which was released in year 2009 and led him to be known as a superstar by the media and audience of Kerala. None of his films in 2010 did well at the box office and this raised doubts of Prithviraj's solidness as a superstar. In 2011, he yet again proved his credibility as an actor through his multi-lingual film Urumi which was also produced by him. Though the film was only an average hit, it still raised hopes in the audience that Prithviraj is still a reliable actor. He has also sung few songs for the film.
In the Tamil film industry, Prithviraj made his debut with the film Kana Kandaen in year 2005. He played a negative role in this film as a sophisticated villain. He was appreciated and well accepted into the Tamil industry with this film itself. After tha, he did the film Parijatham directed by Bhagyaraj. In 2007, he acted in the film Mozhi alongside actress Jyothika and talented actor Prakash Raj. The film became a big hit in Kollywood. In the same year, he did two other movies in Tamil namely Satham Podathey and Kannamoochi Yenada both of which were average hits only. Prithviraj's latest Tamil release is Raavanan which was simultaneously made in Hindi. Though the main lead of this film was Vikram, Prithviraj also got a lot of credit for his performance. Prithviraj's debut as a playback singer came with the film Puthiya Mukham in the year 2009 by singing the title song for the film 'Kaane Kaane'. Some of his other songs are 'Kaattu Paranjathum' in Thanthonni, 'Kettille Kettille' in Pokkiri Raja, 'Njan' in Anwar and 'Vadakku Vadakku' in Urumi.Awards won by Prithviraj Sukumaran
