Agastya muni is the one of the Saptharshis. ( Saptharshis means seven sages). He has married Lopamudra. They had lived in north India and later travelled to south India. Once he has been doing a yaga on waiting for lord Rama in a place. He has grouped the Kalasham got from Yaga. These Kalasham are combined and form the mountain Kalashumala. It is said that the place has got that name from this story. There is another story also available about the place. The place Kalashumala is also known as Narimada. It is said that there are lot of fox are lived in the cave present in that place, hence the name Narimada gets. Anyhow, these are only stories and credibility of this is unknown.

The story of the Kalashumala is not at all important, but the popularity of this place is coming with presence of critically endangered tree Kula vetti, scientifically known as Syzygium travencoricum. The tree also termed as Poriyan, or Vathamkolli. The tree comes under the family Myrtaceae includes the plum tree scientifically known as Syzygium Cumini. These trees are normally nurtures in area of red hill which has the height of more than two hundred feet. The best feature of this tree is, it have the property to hold under water by its root. So that it helps to protect water and reduces scarcity of water in regions. By presence of this tree, region near Kalashamala or Narimada hills are always in wet condition. According to estimation there are only 300 numbers of this trees are presently available in earth. In this most of trees are belongs to Kalashumala. Presence of Syzygium travencoricum has brought Narimada in to global map of Lots of peoples from our country and foreign countries are visiting this place to see this endemic species.

He has written about this place and tree in his book 'Flora of the presidency of Madras' which is published in 1910-12 epoch. The next one is done by professor Vidyasagar from the agricultural university of Kerala. He has taken his study in 2005. Later, P. N. Ganesh and Dr Harinarayanan from botany department of Sreekrishna College Guruvayoor have done further study about this endemic species. They have argued that these trees are only available in Kerala and Kalashumala is the main habitat for these trees.

How to reach Narimada aka Kalashumala


The place is located in Chowannoor grama panchayath near Kunnamkulam. First you have to reach Kunnamkulam and from there go to Wadakkanchery route. Approximately after 4 km you will reach Chowannoor bus stop. Take a turn to left and go another 1.5 km approximately. Again there is a turn to right go with that way approximately 500m; you will see a board that shows the way to Narimada on right side. Don't forget to ask any near by people if you have any doubt on the route.
