Pathiramanal Island is a small uninhabited viaalge in the midst of the Vembanad Lake on the borders of the Kottayam and Alappuzha Districts.
About pathiramanal Island The area of the Pathiramanal Island is about 10 acres. The island has beautiful sceneries and breathtaking surroundings. There is a story connected with this island. It is said that a young brahmin boy dived in to the lake and the waters made way for the boy. The land that rose when the waters made way became the beautiful and enchanting Pathiramanal Island, meaning "Island of the midnight sands".
Bird watching at Pathiramanal Island The island is home to various rare varieties of migratory birds. There are about 91 species of local birds and about 50 migratory. Pintail Ducks, Indian Pond Heron, Common Teal, Cattle Egret, Night Heron, Whistling Duck, Cormorant, Darter, Purple Heron, gulls, terns, large egrets, Intermediate Egret, Little Egret, Pheasant-tailed and Bronze-winged Jacanas, Stork-billed Kingfisher, Watercock, Indian Shag, Cotton Pygmy-Goose, Little Cormorant and Whiskered Tern are some of the birds and there arereports of seeing Monarch Flycatcher also here.
Location of the Pathiramanal Island The Pathgiramanal Island is located at about 1.5 kilometers from the Muhamma Boat Jetty and about 4 kilometers from tha most famous place in Kerala the Kumarakom Backwaters and the Bird sanctuary. The maximum length of the Island is 550meters and width 450 meters and the distance to the nearest point to the Mainland is about 810 meters.
How to Reach pathiramanal Island You have to reach one of the airports in Kerala that is Thiruvananthapura,. Kochi and Kozhikode. From these airports, Kochi is the nearest, you can get hired vehicles or transport buses etc. to travel to the Muhamma Boat Jetty. By motor boat you will take about an hour and a half to reach Pathiramanal Island. From Kumarakom it takes about 40 minutes to the Island. If you can get to a speed boat you can reach Pathiramanal within half an hour.
You can also travel by train from Kozhikode and Thiruvananthapuram to Alappuzha and it will surely be comfortable and easier than travelling by other vehicles. Other cities and towns in Kerala and Tamilnadu are well connected by the Road and Rail networks.
