General information about Kollam


Kollam, known for it's historical importance and natural beauty is at a distance of 71 km from Thiruvananthapuram. This place is situated along the Ashtammudi Lake. The boat cruise from Ashatammudi to Alapuzha is the main attraction here. It is A 8 hr journey and the longest backwater trip in Kerala. The place was formerly known as 'Quilon'. And presently, this is the gateway to the romantic and beautiful Kerala backwaters. The best time to visit Kollam is from the months of September to March.


How to Reach Kollam


Kollam is well connected by all modes of transportation. The nearest airport is in Thiruvananthapuram, 71 km away from Kollam. Kollam can be also accessed by railway. Kollam railway station is one of the main railway staion in South Kerala. There are bus services available to Kollam from the main towns in Kerala and near by States like Tamilnadu and Karnataka.


Kollam in History


Kollam holds a prime position in Kerala history. This place was one of the finest commercial trading centre in the ancient time. Phoenicians, Persians, Arabs, Greeks, Romans and Chinese traded with this port. It was known by the name Qilon at that time. Ibn Batuka considered it among the top five ports seen by him. Later Velu Thampi Dalawa started two bazars and invited merchants from near by states for commercial activities in Kollam.


Main attractions in Kollam


1. Astamudi Lake; Ashtamudi Lake with it's panaramic beauty is the prime attraction in Kollam. The accommodation facilities availavle for the visitors offer the opportunity to explore the natural beauty. This lake covers more than 30% of Kollam.

2.Mata Amritanandamayi Ashram is a spiritual trust in Valikkavu. This is a renowned international pilgrimage centre.

3.Thangassery Light house is 144 feet heigh and was built in late 1902. Thangassery also hosts many historically important places like old Portuguese fort and church.

4. There are nine temples in Kollam. Ananda Valleeswaram Temple, the ancient Sastha temple and the Subramanya Temple are the main temples among these nine temples. All these temples are sculptured in the traditional style.

5. 'Kettuvallam' is modern houseboat with all the facilities. You can stay inside these boats enjoying the serene lake on rental basis.
