Choolanur Peacock Sanctuary is a unique sanctuary for Peacocks in the state of Kerala. There are more than 200 peacocks, which is the national bird of our country, in the Choolanur Peacock Sanctuary.
About Choolanur Peacock Sanctuary The forests in the sanctaury are not thickly wooded but of rocky terrain spotted with shrubs and trees here and there and irrigated by numerous small streams. You can see about 100 of the odd species of birds also here. You can also see hundreds of butterflies in the area after the monsoon rains. You will enjoy seeing the multi coloured butterflies flitting in the region after the monsoons.
Location Details of Choolanur Peacock Sanctuary The Choolanur Peacock Sanctuary is spread over 485 hectares of forest land from the villages of Peringottukurissi, Chulannur, and Thenur in Palakkad district and the Thiruvilwamala-1 village in Thrissur district. This sanctuary is located with in the Alathur Forest Range.
This Sanctuary is home to various other birds as well as a herbal garden. Kunchan Smritivanam is a 200 hectare forest area named after the famous poet Kunjan Nambiyar.
How to Reach Choolanur Peacock Sanctuary Choolanur Peacock Sanctuary is located at about 30 kilometers from Palakkad town and Palakkad is the nearest railway station to go to the Sanctuary. Coimbatore is the nearest airport and is placed at about 55 kilometers away. You can also reach either Kochi, Thiruvananthapuram or calicut airports. If you do so it would be better for you to travel to Palakkad through railway trains, since Palakkad is very well connected with rest of India.
