St. George Forane Church Edathua, also known as St. Mary’s Church Koilmukku and then again renamed as St. George Church Koilmukku, is located in he district of Alappuzha of the state of Kerala
About the St Georges Church, Edathua Edathua Church was founded in the year 1810, is one of the prominent and prospering foranes under the Archdiocese of Chaganacherry. Edathua Church has a profound influence in the spiritual, material, social and educational realms of thousands of devotees who throng irrespective of the caste creed or religion, living in and around Edathua. There are about 2000 families living in and around Edathua Church who have nurtured it as the apple of the eye. The Church is now one of the well known and the prominent pilgrim centers of Kerala.
About the history of St George Church St George one of the famous apostles of Jesus came to kerala in 52 AD and established Christian communities at different places in Kerala. St. Mary's Church at Kalloorkatt (Champakulam) was founded in 417 AD. The people of Edathua had o journey to Chempakulam for their spiritual needs. As the christian community grew in the Edathua, they decided to get a church on their own . Rev. Fr. Geevarghese Valiaveettil Kathanar, who was the first priest from Edathua, inspired and motivated the laity, and with the assistance of few prominent people like Kurian Tharakan Ooramvelil, Pothan Mappila Thekkedathu, Mathan Mappila Methikalam, Chekkidikadu, Thommi Mappila Vettuthottunkal, initiated the move for a Church at Edathua. The foundation was laid and with the support from all the communities in and around Edathua the construction was over Later a new bigger one came up in the area and was named St Georges Church.
St Georges Church Edathua The first ever vicar of Edathua Church was Rev. Fr. Valiaveettil Geevarghese Kathanar and the Present Vicar is Rev.Fr. Kurian Puthenpura, who has been there from June 2007. There was a statue of the saint lying in the attic of the edappally church and with the intervention of the Rev. Fr. Geevarghese Valiaveettil Kathanar, it was brought to Edathua. The miraculous powers of the saint became well known and people started visiting the church particularly during the Saint's feast held from 27th April to 7th May.
Insitutions under St George's Church Edathua The Church runs on its own, an arts and science college, a Higher Secondary School, two High Schools, three Lower Primary Schools, an Industrial Training Center and a Residential English Medium School. Institutions which are under the Edathua Church are namely St. Aloysius' College, St. Aloysius' Higher Secondary School, St. Aloysius' Lower Primary School, St.Marys' Girls High School, St.Marys' Lower Primary School, S M S S (Sreemoolam Tirunal Shastiabdya Smaraka) Lower Primary School, Georgian English Medium Public School and Pius X Industrial Training Centre.
