Yesterday there were millions of people gathered at Sabarimala for Makaravilakku Festival 2011. The Sabarimala Stampede Tragedy occured around 9 pm last night when the Sabarimala Pilgrims were on their way back from the dharshan of Makaravilakku Festival. Due to heavy crowd 104 people reported dead and more than 50 people have been injured in a Stampede at Sabarimala in Idukki district of Kerala.

Report says that Cause for Sabarimala Stampede was due to a jeep, as it went out of contol and it hits the devotees of Sabarimala and other vehicles, and this caused a great havoc and resulted in Sabrimala Stampede at Pullumedu in Idukki district which is about 12 kms from Sabarimala. Some people says that the Stampede at Sabarimala was due to some people who wants to have a better glimpse of Makarajyothi 2011, climbed on top of parked jeep which was overturned and due to this, people got panic, resulting in Sabarimala Stampede accident. Some other people witnessed that the Sabarimala Stampede was due to collision of two buses which carried the pilgrims of Sabarimala and in due course resulted in Stampede.

Sabarimala Stampede Relief Activities and Rescue Operations


Most of the victimes are from Andhra Pradesh, Karnataka and from Tamil Nadu. The injured were taken to hospitals and health centres at Vandiperiyar, Kumily, Kottayam and some other places in Kerala for treatment. Ministers and higher police officials are camping at the accident sites at Kumali town to enquire about the matter. The honorable Chief Minister has declared Rs. 1 lakh as compensation for the family who lost their life due to this stampede at Sabarimala. More over he declared Rs. 50,000 as compensation for the persons who got deadly injuries.

Only the names of 74 people have been identified so far and the names of the injured are as follows:

Basaraj- (23), Mahesh (28), NJ Sami (28), Vasu (30), Suresh (27), Yamanappa (26), Sathish (22), MJ Sami (30)

People Belongs to Karnataka as identified as follows:
Mahesh Bhasu, Munnusami, Rohit (27), Jagadeesh, Jagan, Ranganathan.

People from Danapur: Lohit Danapur-Suresh (28), Basavaraja.

From Podukotta- Bogesh (28).

From Koppal - Vasu (30),

Victims belongs to Tamilnadu - Jaganathan (51), Chinna Sami (30), Dharmapur of Dharmapuri.

People from Andhra Pradesh: Padakapurti Sathya Reddy, Kadupetty -Jagadeesh, Jangatty-Yamunappa (26).

Relief activities and rescue operations at Kerala are taken care on a fast pace and control rooms are functioning at Kumily and Vandiperiyar to rescue and to coordinate relief activities and a helpline at Kumili Police Station has also been set up and the numbers are 04869 222049, 252244 and 253456.
