Kodiyeri Balakrishnan is a member of the Communist Party of India-Marxist (CPI-M) as well as the Minister for Home and Tourism in Kerala state. He is one of the strongest leaders of CPI (M). His huge contributions to the party has made the party elect him as the Polit bureau member since 2008. He came into politics through the students wing of CPI (M) during his college days. For many successive years, he remained the state leader of SFI (Students Federation of India). While studying in Kodiyeri Oniyan High school, Kodiyeri was the K.S.F Unit Secretary and during his college days at Mahatma Gandhi College at Mahe, he was the Union chairman of K.S.F. Kodiyeri Balakrishnan has also been imprisoned for 16 months under MISA during the Emergency Period in 1975. In Thalassery, he was elected four times as the MLA. Kodiyeri represented the Thalassery Legislative Assembly from 2000 to 2011. He reigned as the Minister for Home and Tourism development of the Kerala state from 2006 to 2011. From 1980 to 1982, Kodiyeri was the District President of the DYFI. He has also been elected once as the CPI (M) secretary in the Kannur district. Kodiyeri Balakrishnan joined the CPI (M) in 1970. During his tenure as Home Minister, he has brought about many changes and improvements in Kerala. The new movement called 'JANAKEEYA Police' was formulated by him which ultimately changed the image of the police force in Kerala. New vehicles were also given to the police force. Previously the police vehicle was a blue jeep but now it has changed to the white Invader. Specifically in Thalassery, Kodiyeri has made huge contributions and developed the district in many forms. Renovations have been made to the forts and churches in Thalassery. Some other developments are also in the process with new projects formulated for creating a marine walk in Thalassery. Kodiyeri Balakrishnan was born in the Kodiyeri village of Thalassery. He did his schooling in Kodiyeri Junior Basic School and Oniyan High School. He has obtained his college graduate degree from Mahatma Gandhi College, Mahe and Trivandrum University College.
