About Muthanga Willdlife Sanctuary


The immense forests which is dancing with the symphony of western winds, this is the best explanation to describe Muthanga Wildlife Sanctuary. The Sanctuary is the first Wildlife Sanctuary in Wayanad. The elephants wandering through the forest roads are a common seen in Muthanga. The relation between the forest and the tourists in Muthanga has years of oldness. The Sanctuary is well known for its wildlife.

Muthanga Wildlife Sanctuary is the second largest Wildlife sanctuary in Kerala. It is also known as Wayanad Wildlfe Sanctuary. The Sanctuary is located 16 kms away from Sulthan Batheri, a place in Wayanad. Wayanad Wildlife Sanctuary has an area of about 344 sq km. The Sanctuary is under consideration by the UNESCO World Heritage Committee to be selected as a World Heritage Site. Muthanga is certainly a hotspot in Kerala tourism.

Climate of Muthanga Wildlife Sanctuary


Muthanga Wildlife sanctuary is having a moderate climate through out the year or simply it is salubrious. Monsoon is very common in this place and is receiving an annual rainfall of about 3000 to 4000 mm. The Sanctuary is also a windy place which includes the South West monsoon winds and dry winds. The relative humidity is about 95 percent during monsoon season. The temperature of Muthanga almost remains constant through out the year.

Attractions in Muthanga Wildlife Sanctuary


Muthanga is composed of dense forests and of course its prime beauty. Muthanga is also famous for its wild elephants. It is also an adobe for tigers, deers, bisons etc. If you are so much lucky enough you can also see some spotted deers and leopards. The Sanctuary is near to Bandipur National Park as well as Muthumala Sanctuary. The wildlife of Muthanga is so vast which also include some rare forest shrubs and some special biodiversity features. Those who want to enjoy the rhythm of nature; Muthanga is exposing some mind thrilling seens.

The forest safaris in Muthanga are also a prime attraction here. This is generally held in the morning and the evening. Generally there will be a rush of tourists to enjoy this ride. These rides through the forests accompanied by the coolness of the forest and watching the herds of elephant will surely be colorful memories of your life. The Elephant Project in Muthanga is also very famous.

Flora: The Sanctuary is rich with its flora. The deciduous forests of Muthanga are composed of trees like maruthi, karimaruthi, rosewood, venteak, vengal, chadachi, mazhukanjiram, bamboos etc. There are also some semi evergreen plants like veteria indica, termianalia paniculata, lagerstroemia, lanceolata etc

Fauna: The fauna of Muthanga Wildlife Sanctuary is rich with elephants, tigers, deers, panthers, jungle cats, monkeys, wild dogs etc. We can also see some varieties of snakes, monitor lizards, bears, bisons etc. The avian fauna include the Peacocks, babblers, cuckoos, owls, woodpeckers, jungle fowls etc. Muthanga Wildlife Sanctuary is a perfect place to experience the wonders of wildlife.

The Way to Muthanga Wildlife Sanctuary


Muthanga is situated along the NH 212. It is about 16 kms away from Sulthan batheri. Through the way we can see some bamboo forests in the boundaries. The forest villages provoke a nostalgic feeling. The rest houses built in bamboos will welcome the tourists who are coming through Kerala- Karnataka check post. Kalpetta is 41 kms away; Manathavadi is 58 kms away and 96 kms away from Calicut.
