UDF strengthened their presence in the Kerala State Legislative Assembly by winning the Piravom By election 2012. The by election was held on 17th March 2012 and a record of 86.3 percentage votes were polled in Piravom Constituency. By Election came into picture after the death of the former Food and Civil Supplies Minister, T M Jacob.
Anoop Jacob defeated his LDF opponent by a margin of 12070 votes. Out of the 12 Pnchayaths, LDF enabled to find lead only in Chottanikkara and Thiruvankulam Panchayath. The victory in Piravom enabled UDF to regain back to 72 seats in Assembly. Following the massive victory, Anoop commented that the success was the result of the joint effort of the UDF. He also dedicated his victory to his deceased father. He also said that everyone should learn a lesson from the result and if the UDF had worked together like this in the previous election they could have won more than 100 seats. Anoop Jacob will take oath as member of the Kerala legislative assembly on Thursday. CPM State secretary Pinarai Vijayan commented that UDF has nothing to celebrate in Piravom victory and they utilised their illegal political power to win the by election.
Kerala opposition LDF had suffered another setback recently when the CPM leader Selvaraj who was the MLA from Neyyattinkara had resigned from the Assembly. He was later expelled from the CPM as well. Now both the fronts are looking forward to win in Neyyatinkara constituency. LDF has to fight hard to regain their constituency.
