Piravam constituency is an area in central Kerala which has a high Christian population and where the church has got some control over the politics. This by election is the result of T M Jacob who had won from this constituency in 2011 with a margin of just below 1000 votes.Importance of this by poll
We all know the unstable equation UDF government has when comparing with the LDF in the assembly. In 2011 UDF had won the election with just 71 seats under their belt. In an assembly which have 140 total seats the number 71 seemed to be the pass mark.LDF had secured 68 seats then. It in this juncture that the Piravam by poll election becomes crucial for the Kerala government stability. Further take note of the fact that the UDF representative from Piravam (Late T M Jacob) have won the elections against the LDF candidate M J Jacob by a very meager margin. So in this scenario with the various social issues against the UDF government coming to the fore elections become a matter of unpredictability.Candidates
Let us see the candidates of both the parties. Anoop Jacob(son of late T M Jacob) will be contesting the elations from the UDF seat. Prior to this he was the state chief of the youth wing. He will be banking on his father's reputation in the constituency and the idea of new youngsters coming to the politics as the general idea to get his mass appeal.
The LDF candidate is M J Jacob who had the lost the 2011 election to the UDF candidate by a very small margin. In fact he had won from this seat in 2007 by a big margin of more than 5000 votes. He will be using his reputation to make people aware of what he had done for the constituency in his term as the member to bank on votes.Election date issue
The election date as decided by election commission is decided on March 18. In fact it comes on a Sunday of the lent season. This becomes crucial in the scenario where the Christian community would go for the communion making the amount of polling to get reduced. This can affect the chances of both the parties and indeed both of them have been vocal in their criticism against the date issued by the election commission. It remains to be seen whether the date change as requested by Kerala government will be accepted by the election commission but it can be assured a close fight can be seen in the Piravam by poll.
