Hay Festival 2011 Kerala begins today


The second edition of the Hay Festival Kerala is beginning on thursday. The event will feature many discussions, debates, film screening and other cultural events. The Poetry Gala by many poets from around the world is the main attraction. Read more about the Hay festival below.

HayKerala is all set to celebrate the second edition of the Hay Festival beginning on thursday. The Hay Festival is a cultural event featuring poets, storytellers, novelists, journalists, filmmakers and other artists.

Officially known as The Alchemist Hay Festival, the event will be conducted from 17th to 19th of November at the Kanakakunnu Palace, the summer residence of the Royal family of Travencore. The festival is sponsored by Qatar Airways.
The presentations of various poetic works from across the world will be the main attraction of the event. The participation of the India-Wales Writers' Chain that was formed at the last year's Hay Festival will increase the sheen of the event.

Famous Poets including K Satchidanandan, Simon Armitage, Twm Morys, Anupama Raju and Eurig Salisbury will give the poetry lovers a big treat with the poems in languages extending to Malayalam, English, Tamil, Spanish, Welsh, Icelandic and Hindi. The festival will witness around 45 active discussions. Jung Chang, Anna Funder, Shashi Tharoor, Simon Singh, Anitha Subrahmanya, Arvind Malhotra, Anita Nair and Rukmini Nair also are included in the list of speakers. Simon Singh is lecturing on cosmology and codes and writer Germaine Greer will speak on the Shakespeare's Lovers.

Apart from literature, the festival will feature the various aspects and dimensions of films, cosmology, children's literature, media and medicine. The current social changes, Politics and other subjects will be also a part of the event.

The event will be celebrating the languages of the world and examining the current issues, as told by Lyndy Cooke, the Executive Producer of Hay Festival Kerala. The most important feature of the festival is the India-Wales Writers Chain itself, that started last year. This is an poetry exchange programme. As a part of the programme, eight poets from both India and Wales will translate their work into each other's language.

There will be special screenings of three documentary films Marathon Boy, I for India and Shot in Bombay. The Oscar winning filmmaker Andrew Ruhemann and award winning French novelist Agnès Desarthe will grace the occassion with their presence. The BBC World anchor Nik Gowing will lead a debate on energy production. There will be the celebration of the Kerala cuisine also. The entry for the festival is free.
